Third Learning Journal
When I started reading this chapter I immediately started to think about the news I heard about Mr. Beast. He was offered 1 billion dollars for his youtube channel which may sound crazy until you break down the numbers. I just looked up his video views over the last 30 days and it was 1.027 billion views, his largest video was a squid games video which had 238 million views….which is more than double the superbowl. At the end of the day social media is all about numbers and where it started was how many people liked or even watched my post, but it seems like it has slowly changed into an ad cash cow. Social media influencers exist because of the amount of eyes they get on them and this correlates to potentially how many eyes a company can get on their product. Something else that stood out to me is how much social media has grown over the last 10 years. To me it seems like Instagram has been around forever but the fact that their users have increased from 1 to 2 billion users is crazy and the size of that audience is why a whole industry has popped up because of social media. Recently we have seen Tik Tok burst onto the scene and it's all to do with their algorithm that generates views and interactions like no other. Meta has tried to copy this with Instagram reels but their is something they are fundamentally missing that doesn’t replicate Tik Tok’s model. I often wonder just how much social media has changed the trajectory of the human race, it's a scary proposition. For me this reading doesn't really change anything for me. I rarely post on social media in the first place and I don’t think I have a reason to push to get my followers or views higher……yet, once I start a business I think social media will be a crucial marketing resource and I have a daily example of that when I go on instagram and see all that my brother is doing with his company NxtGenNetwork.
Hey Michael,
ReplyDeleteI like your introduction and how you actually explained the numbers of someone you had found interesting. I hadn't heard of that, but social media really is taking over, the numbers cannot be argued with. Social media influencers aren't going anywhere based on how the numbers keep growing, and as you mentioned are growing to be higher than what is usually some of the most watched TV in America.
